My sirs and madams, this is the morning episode I

0:07

Say this is the morning episode but

0:10

Going forward. I am probably not gonna do like a morning and a bonus

0:16

Separately, I'll probably just edit edit them together

0:20

into one episode

0:24

Because I think posting two short podcasts a day

0:30

During the times where I do them twice a day is probably a little bit overkill

0:36

so I'm probably just gonna

0:40

Merge the the morning and the afternoon episodes together into one

0:45

episode

0:48

Anyway this morning

0:52

I made the decision before hitting the record button

0:57

That I was gonna talk about

0:59

My little experiment with

1:06

Quitting alcohol a

1:09

While back, I'm a I'm about at the halfway point of this experiment

1:15

So about 15 days ago. I

1:18

Put a blog post up on my blog

1:21

Proclaiming that I was gonna quit alcohol for a month

1:25

And it's been about 15 days since since then I haven't had a drink haven't

1:35

Haven't had any beer and

1:37

beer is my

1:39

Drink of choice. I've been a beer drinker for my entire adult life

1:45

For the most part with very little interruption

1:49

So this is not

1:52

I'm not

1:55

Not a thing that I usually do

1:57

So for me, it is an experiment because I I don't do this kind of thing

2:04

Typically, it's not in my makeup. I

2:08

Think

2:10

In that regard it's probably a somewhat interesting

2:16

Somewhat of an interesting experiment because it's something I've never done before so I don't really know what the results will be

2:24

And so far, I mean I came into it with no expectations really I

2:31

mean I've quit alcohol for

2:34

weeks at a time before

2:36

But never like a full month. I don't think I mean

2:41

Maybe I did and I just didn't realize it

2:44

But

2:46

This is the first time I'm like really doing it consciously and actually

2:51

paying attention to what what changes there have occurred and

2:56

So far, I got to tell you like I don't really have much to report. I

3:02

Was a moderate drinker to begin with

3:07

And the whole reason I started this

3:10

Experiment was to see if it would help with my mental health

3:14

and

3:15

I got to tell you I don't really see much of a change in

3:20

things

3:23

I

3:25

Still feel like crap every once in a while just I

3:29

Guess just the normal variation in the in the body. I just I don't think alcohol is making much of a difference

3:36

I got to be honest with you

3:39

Maybe in terms of mental clarity in terms of motivational drive

3:43

I think maybe that is where the biggest gains are happening

3:47

Like I started this podcast and I'm actually sticking to it

3:56

Maybe it's having an effect on my motivation

4:00

I've

4:02

Maybe it's hard to say for sure, but

4:06

I feel like maybe I'm a little bit more motivated to do things, but it's

4:10

Hard to say. I'm sorry. This is not very satisfying. I got 15 more days to go. I'm gonna stick with it

4:18

Heading into winter break here

4:22

I'm not winter break, but we're heading into Thanksgiving break. The kids are gonna be at home

4:27

So I won't be in my mobile sound studio as often. So I'm not gonna be doing this podcast as

4:33

Regular early. I

4:36

Still have to get over my

4:40

I don't really have a sound studio at home. All I got is this mobile sound studio

4:47

So, I don't really know where I would record a podcast in my house I

4:53

Mean I've I make my youtube videos from my home office

4:58

And maybe I'll do it from there. I don't know

5:02

but this podcast so far has been all about recording my

5:06

my thoughts in my mobile sound studio and

5:09

If I'm not gonna be in my mobile sound studio on a regular basis

5:13

I'm not gonna get an opportunity to record but maybe I will maybe I'll just run some errands or whatever and record some stuff

5:21

Anyway, I digress

5:24

halfway through the non-alcohol experiment not much to report

5:29

except for maybe some

5:31

Some effects on my motivational drive

5:35

Maybe I'm putting more energy into protect productive things perhaps

5:40

Like I said, I was a moderate drinker man. I was a moderate drinker

5:47

And I I don't think moderate drinking has as much of an effect on you as people might think

5:55

In fact, I think it might actually make weekends a little bit more dull

6:00

to be honest with you because

6:03

There's nothing more enjoyable than having a drink out at a restaurant

6:07

With your significant other, you know

6:09

That's one of my favorite things in the world

6:13

Just sitting there out in a restaurant that has a cool like atmosphere and

6:18

Feeling a little buzz. It's just

6:20

That's culture man, that's what that's what I mean, that's culture, bro

6:30

That's all the culture I get out here in suburbia

6:34

Shit man, like what do you want me to do? I

6:38

Don't know man

6:40

anyway

6:42

We'll see how it goes with the remainder

6:44

I think this whole like quitting alcohol thing is not all it's hyped all it's hot all it's fucking goddamn it

6:52

Sorry for my bad language again

6:56

Yeah, I think it's just not all it's

7:00

Hopped up to be what the hell I can't think of the word hyped up to be

7:05

I don't know man. I don't know man. I don't know man. I don't know man

7:10

What the hell I can't think of the word hyped up to be

7:15

It's not all it's hyped up to be I know that's not it

7:21

Yeah, okay

7:23

Well, i'm nearing the end of my um, my my drive here

7:28

I called it a drive

7:31

I wanted it to be a secret

7:34

This is my mobile sound studio, okay

7:37

well

7:39

Ah, yeah, so yesterday I talked a little bit about nvidia and how the stock market was going to be up today

7:44

Well, it is

7:46

That was pretty obvious

7:52

That was pretty obviously gonna happen and it did

7:56

So my portfolio is nice and green baby

7:59

Nice and green. Hell yeah, fucking a shit

8:03

Well, yeah, it's green

8:05

and

8:07

I'm hoping i'm actually hoping we trade sideways for a while because I like to make money off of selling options

8:14

and when the market's just screaming higher, it's hard to like

8:18

For me, I like to sell puts

8:22

um against a stock

8:25

At a price where I would actually want to own it

8:28

And when this when all the stocks i'm watching just scream past any like price where I would actually be willing to buy them

8:35

I can't really sell puts against that

8:38

against that price

8:43

So for that reason i'm kind of hoping we don't just scream higher

8:48

I actually liked the correction we had recently. It's it's healthy

8:54

And I also have a huge cash position because i'm a very conservative investor

9:00

So I

9:02

I mean

9:04

Yeah

9:07

I have a big cash position. That's all i'm saying. And uh, so

9:13

I'm prepared for a correction like a big correction

9:18

Then on the flip side when when the market screams higher like it's looking like it might do

9:24

I don't get to participate

9:26

in that as much

9:29

Which is unfortunate, but that's you call that opportunity risk

9:34

So i'm choosing opportunity risk over

9:38

like real risk, you know

9:41

Risk of losing a lot of freaking money

9:44

Frigid money

9:45

And the market will correct very violently

9:48

eventually

9:50

It's gonna happen

9:53

Someday, all right

9:56

And until that happens, I think selling options is kind of like how I play the market

10:04

Um

10:06

So when corrections happen I sell options into those corrections and as the market goes lower

10:15

I spread the maturity of those. I don't know if maturity is the right word, but I spread the expirations across like a nice

10:24

Time range so as the market corrects I sell against strikes lower and lower

10:30

And

10:32

Until we bottom out and option premiums are through the roof and

10:38

By the time we bottom out i'll be

10:41

more exposed to the market

10:44

and

10:46

Just kind of rambling about trading right now

10:53

Hopefully i'll get some app development work done today, what the fuck is this car doing jesus christ

11:01

Oh

11:06

Full self-driving people sometimes it gets confused by a pile of leaves on the ground

11:13

Yep fucking thing anyway, uh, yeah, hopefully i'll do some work on my apps today

11:23

Perhaps I will perhaps i'll work on my apps. I know I got to get my timer app out there in the world

11:30

I was actually using it for my kettlebell exercises yesterday, and I noticed a few things that I need to fix

11:36

So it's not as done as I proclaimed originally

11:40

So i'll be working on that

11:45

Today

11:50

I would be remiss not to talk about the historic rug pull that occurred today in the markets

11:57

I was so smug this morning talking about how oh, I knew the market would be up today

12:03

I knew it would be up because nvidia reported such wonderful earnings

12:08

and lo and behold

12:11

We continued the sell-off. How about that? So nvidia was up five percent

12:18

At the beginning of the day and now it's down over two percent. I haven't checked it

12:23

Yeah, so I mean I figure I should mention like it was pretty pretty historic market move today

12:31

So I would be remiss not to talk about it

12:34

So wow that happened. Holy crap

12:38

That was pretty crazy

12:41

so this um

12:44

This underscores the importance of position sizing and

12:49

Underscores the importance of position sizing risk management

12:55

and

12:57

It's why I have a large cash position

13:01

Because of days like this or sell-offs like this

13:04

You have to assume that this stuff is going to happen eventually

13:08

You have to assume that big market sell-offs are going to happen

13:12

And for that reason you've got to be prepared for it

13:15

So I think a lot of the

13:18

the price action or the

13:20

the price activity in

13:22

in the market over the last

13:24

week or so

13:26

A lot of it could be people getting liquidated people overexposed to the market just too complacent

13:33

Too complacent with the buy the dip mentality

13:37

Because over a long period of time

13:40

Most of these sell-offs have been very brief and they've been

13:46

They've been met with a lot of buyers

13:48

And people just think that's going to continue forever

13:51

But it does not continue forever

13:54

Eventually the market will continue to sell off

13:58

And um, i'm kind of stepping back

14:01

uh

14:03

When this kind of stuff happens, I like to add exposure

14:07

gradually

14:11

So right now i'm like i'm at like a 60 something percent equity exposure

14:20

I would like to get to 75 equity exposure by the end of the sell-off whenever that happens to be

14:27

If that ever happens

14:30

I do have some positions that are very very in the red right now and that sucks but

14:36

Um

14:38

Yeah, i'm kind of maxed out on some of my positions where

14:41

I don't like to go too far over

14:45

five to ten percent

14:46

in one position

14:48

or one sector even

14:51

so I have maxed out on a few positions where i'm

14:54

I'm like at my comfortable level of exposure and i'm not going to continue

14:59

adding exposure to

15:02

Those particular names I don't really want to talk about in particular names because I don't want to give

15:08

I don't want to give anything

15:10

that resembles financial advice because

15:14

Probably shouldn't be taking financial advice from me. That's for dang sure

15:20

But I just kind of

15:21

Giving my general thoughts on the market and what's going on in the stock market right now

15:26

My approach generally is to just keep a big cash position

15:30

So that when events like this occur

15:34

You have cash to take advantage of them

15:37

And the way i've been adding exposure is selling puts under the market

15:43

And if those puts get assigned

15:46

That's fine

15:48

And then I like to spread out the expiration over

15:53

a long period of time

15:55

So that like not everything is expiring all at once so

16:02

I don't know. I talked about this this morning. It's it's not important

16:06

Like do you really care how I approach my investing? That's not really what this podcast is about

16:12

I'm, just kind of telling you what's on my mind right now

16:14

It's it's hard to ignore the markets right now just because it's so crazy

16:18

And crypto is completely collapsing and I have some exposure to crypto

16:23

And I have some exposure to crypto, which is not very comfortable. A lot of people are going through the same

16:30

pain right now, so

16:32

It's probably what's on on the minds of a lot of americans right now

16:36

Since so much of our uh consumer confidence is derived from the stock market

16:41

I would say

16:43

But anyway, anyway, anyway, anyway

16:47

um

16:48

well

16:50

Like I said this morning, I noticed some stuff I need to add to my timer app and that's

16:57

um

16:58

after I closed all my

17:00

Market related tabs and actually got focused on my work again. I did make some progress on my timer app

17:07

I realized there's some stuff I have to do with the audio session

17:10

This is a lot of this is something a lot of apps get wrong

17:13

They don't handle the audio session properly

17:18

So

17:19

And there's a lot of nuance to it and uh, it's not obvious how you're supposed to do it

17:25

But what I want the app to do and I want to add some like some basic customization at this level

17:30

so

17:31

When the timer finishes it plays

17:34

a completion sound

17:38

Yes

17:39

it plays a completion sound and what I want to want that to do like

17:44

Say i'm listening to a podcast or something at the same time as my timer completes

17:48

I want that completion sound to play to interrupt my podcast like temporarily pause my

17:54

podcast, play the completion sound, and then resume my podcast, and I'm gonna add

18:01

an option where you can either loop the completion sound continuously until you

18:07

close the timer, or it will only play the completion sound once, and then resume

18:12

whatever audio you were listening to. And yeah, I'm just getting that working so

18:19

that it functions the way I want. And then it will be close to completion, and

18:25

then my timer app will be complete.

18:31

So that's that. And this is the so-called bonus, I'm gonna call it the bonus

18:37

segment now. It was the whole bonus episode, but this is the bonus segment. So

18:43

I said what I had to say about the crazy market action we've been having, crazy

18:47

stock market action. A lot of people getting kicked in the dick right now,

18:54

including myself. Things were looking really rosy for a

18:59

while there, and now dick-kicking has commenced. It doesn't feel good. But the

19:07

markets almost always bounce back eventually, so you got to have cash on

19:13

the sidelines, as they say, to take advantage of the times when the market

19:18

does do this kind of stuff. And it could go a lot lower too. It can go a lot lower,

19:23

and it can hurt a lot. And that's where people like Warren Buffett step in and

19:28

start buying. That's why he has such a massive cash position. The guy's about to

19:34

retire, but I think you know what I'm talking about.

19:37

Old Warren Buffett. I mean, value investing, that's what value investors do.

19:42

They wait for the stock market to take a complete and utter cathartic dump, and

19:50

then they start buying. Well, I kind of have a little bit of that approach. I'm

19:59

not that much of a value investor. I do like to buy things when they're down, but

20:04

I don't necessarily wait for, like, once-in-a-lifetime events to buy stocks.

20:16

Because there's bear markets and individual stocks all the time. And I

20:22

often get in trouble when I don't follow this general approach.

20:28

Generally, you should... Personally, I like to buy things when they're down. And when

20:34

I don't do this, when I try to do, like, trend following or something, it

20:42

typically doesn't work out for me. I typically do better buying things when

20:48

they're down and increasing my position as they continue to go down. Ideally,

20:55

that's the best way to accumulate positions. And a lot of... And the

21:03

positions of mine that are doing the worst right now is where I didn't follow

21:07

that strategy. So, there's a lesson to be learned there. And that... One of those

21:18

lessons is don't ask me for financial advice. Anyway, I'm out of here. Thanks for

21:26

listening to the Lone Dev Daily... Wait. No, that's not how it goes. Thank you for

21:34

listening to the Lone Dev Semi-Daily Podcast. You can hit me up on X. My name

21:42

is Sirius underscore Brett on X. You can send me a direct message if there's

21:47

anything you want to talk about on this podcast. I'd love to hear from you.

21:51

Thanks for listening, Sir and Ma'am. Peace out.
